What do you learn or gain by participating in this ensemble?
Ruth programs a such a wonderful variety of music by composers with marginalized identities (including BIPOC and female composers) as well as living composers (including graduate and undergraduate students at Princeton). I love experiencing the music and the stories of these lesser-known composers, including how they interacted with the ideas of their "canonical" contemporaries.

In what ways are the opportunities to tour important to you? Are they an important part of your Princeton University experience?
The tours are fun and are really good for community-building within the ensemble. It's a great opportunity for students whose majors aren't conducive to study-abroad programs to see more of the world!
Is touring in the United States as valuable to you as touring internationally? If they have different value or importance to you, please explain.
Travelling in the US is something that most people have easier access to on their own time–travelling internationally is much more difficult for an individual to plan (especially someone who isn't familiar with the culture of the places they want to go) so I think it's valuable to have these big group trips to international destinations that would otherwise be financially or logistically unachievable for many students.

Touring internationally is definitely more valuable as it offers opportunities to expand one's horizons in a way that touring domestically does not, but touring domestically is still a great opportunity for group bonding.

In what ways are the opportunities to tour important to you? Are they an important part of your Princeton University experience?
The glee club tours (where chamber gets to perform as well) have been the most meaningful parts of my time at Princeton. They bring people together socially, push us musically, and expose us to cultures and music from around the world.

I learn new repertoire (which often can only performed in a large group like Glee) and weekly rehearsals ground me with routine, doing something I like, and the physicality of singing.
