I learned about being a part of a group and understanding my role when contributing to a larger project. Through participating in Sinfonia, I was able to see how important pulling my own weight was and how to support my peers as well as being confident.

It's pretty fun
What do you learn or gain by participating in this ensemble?
I enjoy reading big band charts and playing with a jazz ensemble. I am not a jazz musician nor am I an improviser, but this ensemble gives me a good place to experience jazz and double woodwinds in a professional setting.

About Touring
In what ways are the opportunities to tour important to you? Are they an important part of your Princeton University experience?
Yes, they really help the orchestra bond and feel more like *an ensemble* — this is more difficult on non-tour years as everyone does such different things on campus, and PUO is such a large group. Tours are definitely a super important part of my princeton experience and are where I made most of my closest friends in PUO.
Is touring in the United States as valuable to you as touring internationally? If they have different value or importance to you, please explain.
I haven't toured in the US before — but I think it would still be valuable. There is a different aspect of cultural exploration and exchange if we are able to tour internationally though, which I think is really educationally beneficial to people who might not get the chance to travel otherwise through their Princeton academic experiences (depending on what they're studying, there are variable amounts of flexibility with this).

Touring internationally is more valuable, it's difficult to find touring locations in the United States where you can have the same experience of exploring a new culture as a tourist, because everything is so much more familiar, and also most cities aren't walkable. Having to take ubers everywhere is depressing.

What do you learn or gain by participating in this ensemble?
PUO rehearsals are incredibly fulfilling for me because I love playing orchestral music. The ensemble is very talented, and Michael Pratt is a very caring person. Overall, PUO has been one of the best parts of my freshman year.
