3 topics – timbre, orchestration, film music
Concern that timbre and orchestration could overlap. Annie will think more on this – consider “symphony” or perhaps “instrumentation and orchestration.” As for film music, a suggestion was to focus on a specific period, for example Narrative Film Music, 1927-1961. Annie seemed to like that idea. Anna suggested an alternative: focusing on Chinese film music. Lots on Wong-Kar Wai, also huang-mei opera on film. Anna and Annie will discuss.
Plans to do timbre exam in December.

first year exam: talked through what outlines of lectures/discussions could look like.
general exam: lit review module on chinese music theory; timed write on timbre (familiar area); timed write on a field that is less familiar, something in a more historical musicology area, maybe something in historiography?
language exams: coordinate with anna on mechanism for demonstrating competence in chinese language; r online certification over the summer - reminded about timeline (1 should be complete by start of fall, both by start of third year)

EAS 520 Janet Chen's seminar on 20th century Chinese history
Plans to enroll in the undergrad course for heritage speakers to learn the reading/writing side of Chinese; understands that this does not count toward seminar requirement & that she should make note of the drop deadline and be prepared to drop if it feels like too much alongside seminar work

Interests: popular music, Chinese popular music in the 20th century, has looked at 30s and 40s interested in moving into 70s and 80s where there's still living memory, the voice, sound + cultural politics, timbre, cognition, American popular music
first year exam:
field - hip hop
format - syllabus
general exam:
fields - timbre, chinese pop music
formats - perhaps research paper for timbre maybe synthesizing analysis types via case studies, perhaps lit review for chinese pop music. perhaps consider thinking through a new field that you haven't had experience with before. could move timbre to a timed writing exam to leave room for a fourth, novel field. perhaps film music or music psychology more broadly--not sure about subtopic.
